Gisele Bundchen reveals how Tom Brady proposed to her

The quarterback apparently told a little white lie to set up the big question.

When Tom Brady got down on his knees to propose to Gisele Bundchen, she yelled at him to get back up.

The story behind the quarterback and supermodel’s engagement that has been repeated on the internet by multiple publications was that Brady proposed on a private plane surrounded by white roses, champagne, and Bundchen’s parents. But as part of a lengthy July cover interview with Vogue magazine and one of the publication’s trademark “73 Questions” videos, Bundchen explained how it really went down.

Turns out, Brady tricked Bundchen into rushing to her apartment for the big question by telling her that her home had flooded.

“When he proposed to me, he made up this whole story [about] how my apartment was flooding, and I ran over to fix the situation,” Bundchen told Vogue in the video segment. “When I got there, the whole apartment had candles and rose petals everywhere, and then he went down on his knees to propose, and I’m like, ‘Get up!'”

Why did Bundchen yell at Brady to get on his feet? Reports of Brady’s proposal first hit the internet in late 2008, which was when Brady was recovering from the season-ending torn ACL and MCL injuries he suffered against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first game of the 2008 season.

“Because he just had surgery and had three staph infections,” Bundchen said. “And I was like ‘What are you doing?’ He’s like, ‘I gotta go on my knees,’ and I’m like, ‘No, no, no! Get up, please!'”

Bundchen also told Vogue that while she has a close relationship with some of the mothers at her children’s school, she doesn’t hang out with the significant others of fellow Patriots players.

“My husband is 40, and most of the guys playing with him are 20. Their girlfriends are probably nineteen, with different interests,” Bundchen said. “I go to the games with the kids every Sunday so that Tom feels we’re here for him, and that’s the extent of what I know about football.”

Bundchen told the publication that while Boston isn’t her ideal home, she has a very good reason why their family has spent the last 10 years in the area.

“Why do I live here? It’s called love,” Bundchen said. “I love my husband. My kids were born here, in our old apartment on Beacon Street. They’re little Bostonians, and they love the weather. But I’m not going to lie. Cold is not my flavor. I’m Brazilian. I’d rather live barefoot in a hut in the middle of the forest somewhere.”

Below, check out the full “73 Questions” video, in which Bundchen hangs out at home with her daughter and their dog, greets Brady while he’s playing golf in the backyard, and briefly attempts a Boston accent.
