Kerry Washington had a busy Sunday in Boston, making a visit to the New England Aquarium and enjoying not one but two meals in the North End.

The “Scandal’’ star and her family spent the morning on a VIP tour at the aquarium, where they got up close and personal with various marine life, including harbor seals, small sharks, rays, and Frea, a giant Pacific octopus.

Tony LaCasse, a spokesperson for the aquarium, said that “Aquarium staff were overwhelmed with how warm and friendly’’ Washington was during the visit.

Then it was off to the North End. People magazine reported that the group feasted on eggplant parmesan, penne arrabiata, and octopus salad for lunch at Trattoria Il Panino. They topped off the meal with gelato and a spread of desserts.

Trattoria Il Panino is no stranger to celebrity guests. Other famous diners have included Robert De Niro, Shaquille O’Neal, and Jennifer Lawrence. Restaurant manager Maria Delvecchio told People that Washington was “very friendly’’ — the actress-director took the time for photos with Delveccio and another staff member.

Washington and her family didn’t travel far for their next meal, stopping at Ristorante Lucia, only a few minutes down Hanover Street. Alessandra Pollina, a press representative for Ristorante Lucia wrote in an e-mail to the Globe that the group dined in a private room at the restaurant.

Washington is in town to direct an episode of Showtime’s “SMILF,’’ created by and starring Brookline native Frankie Shaw.
