For the love of roses — and music and parks and city living

Don’t be intimidated by the idea of a Rose Garden Party. The one coming up this Thursday, June 28 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. is not just for those who know horticulture-speak or wear white gloves and silk ascots. Sure, folks put on their party finery, and the really good sports enter — in grand style — the Hat’s Galore contest. But even if you don’t sport head gear, it is worth the price of admission just to watch — and listen to live music courtesy of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra’s Windwood Ensemble and Gerald Mordis, an accomplished violinist who performs with the Boston POPS and the BLO. Of course, the main attraction is the collection of 3,000 blooming rose bushes that fill the Kelleher Rose Garden in the Back Bay Fens.

Admission is $125 and includes champagne, delectable fare from The Catered Affair, and the opportunity to bid on an array of fabulous auction items. (two JetBlue round-trip tickets to anywhere the airline flies direct in the US; a round of golf to The Golf Club of Cape Cod in Falmouth, Massachusetts; a Flip Flop Regatta package valued at $600; an overnight stay for two at the Hotel Commonwealth in Boston with dinner at the Island Creek Oyster Bar are just some of the offerings that will tempt bidders.)
New this year are contributions from two highly regarded local artists, Frank Costantino and Paul McMahan, who will be painting en plein air. These “Fresh Paint” pieces will then be auctioned live to provide a one-of-a-kind souvenir to a deserving patron.
The event supports what we consider one of the defining quality of life programs in the city, ParkARTS, which provides free, quality cultural participatory and performing arts in Boston public parks citywide.
Tickets can be purchased at the garden gate, but surely you would want to let your hosts know you are coming by buying your tickets in advance. Guests can call 617-635-4032 to charge tickets by phone or online at
via PayPal.
So put on those bonnets and bowlers and head to the party. Just follow the link above for directions and parking details.
