Music Inspired a Sculpture at Boston’s Symphony Park

Jacob Kulin’s design for Symphony Park’s sculpture fuses his love for the abstract with the shapes of musical instruments.

Since Design New England interviewed Jacob Kulin for November/December 2007’s “Out of the Woods,” he has been pushing conventional limits in sculpture- and furniture-making with his northern European-inspired creations. Now he’s bringing his talents to Symphony Park in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston to generate an outdoor sculpture as part of the half-acre park’s renovation. Guided by Boston landscape architecture firm Warner Larson Landscape Architects, the renewal of the half-acre property bordered by Edgerly Road and Norway and Burbank Streets is scheduled for the fall of 2014.

Sculptor and furniture maker Jacob Kulin has been selected by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department to design an art installation for the city’s soon-to-be renovated Symphony Park.

Selected by the Boston Parks & Recreation Department and the Boston Art Commission, Boston-based Kulin of Kulin Modern Sculpture & Furniture will indulge the area’s rich culture in music with a sculpture design inspired by string instruments such as the violin, cello, harp, and guitar. His initial design shows that he plans to evoke the aesthetic of a delicate stringed instrument — a fitting element for a park that is often the site of peaceful walks before or after a musical performance at nearby Berklee College of Music and Symphony Hall.
The proposed sculpture is to stand at an impressive 16 feet tall and measure 10 feet in diameter and be constructed of Cor-ten and stainless steel, surrounded by a granite stone seating area. Its installation in the renovated park is scheduled for the spring of 2015.
Kulin’s proposal was inspired by several Scandinavian and Danish designers as well as Italian sculptor Harry Bertoia. The estimated $100,000 installation will be reviewed and approved by the Boston Arts Commission before its completion.
