In a twist on the old saw “Are you working hard or hardly working?” a great corporate work space has to do a lot, but look as if it is hardly doing anything. Fusion Design Consultants, a Boston firm that specializes in corporate, retail, and hospitality interior architecture, clearly got the memo and followed through when it worked with a client on a 27,440 square-foot, full-floor-through office in downtown Boston. Fusion also won the 2013 Excellence in Design Award from the New England Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) for its trouble.
The space is a worthy winner. The design is hip, in the smartest way. Today, office space has to be open but flexible. One minute, clients want a collaborative workspace environment; the next, they needs a private meeting room. Everywhere it must have integrated technology and practical, great-looking furniture and wall systems. But it is the strategically placed visual highlights such as vibrant red accent furniture and flooring that give the Fusion design a sophisticated, relaxed-yet-professional atmosphere.
The design also had to include a reception area, a new board room, and a communal kitchen that can accommodate company-wide gatherings. Perimeter private offices and conference rooms play into the dual functionality of the overall plan with floor-to-ceiling glass coated with a contemporary custom film that allows natural light to penetrate the interior spaces and maintain the sense of openness. Natural materials such as the wood ceiling systems establish a warm atmosphere in the midst of a modern scheme. To top it all off, the project, which was completed in the February 2013, is awaiting LEED certification for its environmentally friendly ways. Nice work.
