Hands down, the most fun event on the New England design industry roster is the annual fashion show produced by the regional chapter of International Interior Design Association (IIDA). For the uninitiated, this is haute couture turned on its head. Teams of designers are given a theme — for 2014’s October show it was “ADAPTAT1ON” — and then tasked with creating outfits made entirely from building materials. Picture an evening gown made of roof shingles, or tails and a top hat composed of carpeting and upholstery tacks, then envision them on models (design team members) parading down the runway in shoes cobbled from, say, mosaic tiles to the cheers (and jeers) of a room full of supporters and detractors from competing design firms. It’s one crazy entertaining evening.
Having judged the event a couple of times, I had the privilege of going backstage before the show to interview the entrants on how they made their costumes from the such oddball components as hardened latex paint and wire screening. I found it the most fascinating part of the competition, but, sadly, a part the audience would never get to see and appreciate.
So, I am happy to report, that thanks to collaboration between IIDA New England and The Innovation and Design Building (IDB) not only can the design community view the winning entries in an exhibition in Suite 144 at the Boston Design Center, but on Wednesday, February 25, the winning teams (listed below with their sponsors) will reveal how they took their design concept to wearable reality. The presentation called 20x20xDesign will be a fast-paced Pecha Kucha-style format followed by a reception. For more information and to RSVP go to bostondesign.com.
