Design New England

May/June 2014 Cover!

Our May/June issue comes out next week with a refreshingly serene master bedroom on the cover. Photographed by Jim Westphalen, it is in a house on Cape Cod that started as a project for architect Sheila Bonnell’s client, a childhood friend. But it became her own home when the client became her husband and the couple moved into the finished house. Elsewhere on the Cape, architect Mark Hammer designed a house in Truro that stays true to the area’s Modernist heritage. With views of a river, seaside marshes, and the ocean, it is located inside the protected Cape Cod National Seashore, which contributing editor Bruce Irving writes about in his regular column on New England icons. Back in the city, we visit a designer’s own South End brownstone and a newly renovated apartment on the top floor of a classic Italianate building. And we offer three cheers to the winners of Design Showdown, our first-ever student competition and party held at the Boston Design Center during this year’s Boston Design Week.
