A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Nicolas Cage almost played Superman on the big screen.

Sounds absurd, right?

Well, this moment in history where Hollywood casting went awry actually happened in the mid-1990s. Not only was Cage set to play the Man of Tomorrow, but Tim Burton was set to direct the film, titled “Superman Lives,’’ with Kevin Smith attached to the project as the original screenwriter.

The absurdity didn’t stop there, as the eventually canned movie was also going to feature Chris Rock as Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen, as well as a light-up suit for the Last Son of Krypton.

Thankfully for fans, this film never saw the light of day, as it was scrapped for 2006’s “Superman Returns.’’

However, “Superman Lives’’ is getting a second chance at life on the silver screen, this time, as the subject of a yet-to-be finished documentary titled, “The Death of ‘Superman Live’: What Happened?’’ directed and produced by Jon Schnepp.

The feature-length documentary still hopes to raise funds in order to complete production, but in the wake of this year’s Comic-Con, Schnepp has decided to release a trailer for the project.

You can check out the video, which features interviews with Burton, Smith, and more, embedded above.
