Fort Point Stage will host a free outdoor screening of “Good Will Hunting’’ later this month in honor of the late Robin Williams.

The volunteer-based performing arts organization will be showing the 1997 classic in the park at Channel Center at 8 p.m. on Aug. 22. The event is a part of the Fort Point’s impromptu outdoor movie night series.

Should it rain, the screening will take place at Wormwood Park at 8 p.m. on Aug. 26.

“The screening is an opportunity for neighbors and visitors to come together, to reflect on the work of Robin Williams that so many of us found inspiring,’’ Steve Hollinger, creative director at Fort Point stage, said in an e-mail. “The fact that ‘Good Will Hunting’ was filmed here in South Boston has meaning as well.’’

While Williams wasn’t a Bostonian, his Academy Award-winning role as Sean Maguire in “Good Will Hunting’’ will forever endear him to area natives.

Soon after news of his death broke, fans of the film turned a Public Garden bench where Williams and Matt Damon shared a scene in “Hunting’’ into a makeshift memorial on Monday night. There’s also a petition floating around the web in an effort to get a bronze statue of the actor and comedian erected next to the “Good Will Hunting’’ bench.

Williams has had a huge impact on the Boston area. As’s Michael Nadeau writes, “Maguire’s such an authentic creation, so skillfully written by [Ben] Affleck and Damon and so wonderfully played by Williams that it seems like he stepped right off L Street onto the screen — bad accent or not. Williams might not have been a Bostonian, but damn it, he sure made himself into an unforgettable one.’’
