It’s official: the new “Power Rangers’’ movie has finally got a release date.

Lionsgate announced on Wednesday that the upcoming reboot of the popular live-action franchise will hit theaters on July 22, 2016, according to Cinema Blend.

The studio’s official description for the new “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’’-based flick calls the film, “a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.’’

“Power Rangers’’ will have some stiff competition in July of 2016, as a slew of big budget movies are slated to come out, including Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur,’’ the Angry Birds movie, “Independence Day 2,’’ as well as the sequel to this summer’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.’’

However, with the recent success of the latest “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’’ film, these “five teenagers with attitude’’ may stand a better chance against the competition than people might think.

Maybe a team-up down the road? Wouldn’t be the first time.

The “Power Rangers’’ reboot will feature a story by executive producer Roberto Orci (“Transformers,’’ “Star Trek,’’ “The Amazing Spider-Man 2’’) and is being written by Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (“X-Men: First Class,’’ “Thor’’).
