Superhero fans are in for a treat as this weekend marks not only the release of the new Avengers movie, but also the return of Free Comic Book Day. From a comedy show to Cinco de Mayo block parties, there’s a little something for everyone to do in Boston this weekend.

Movies: Bill Plympton at the Brattle

Academy Award-nominated animator and director Bill Plympton will be at the Brattle on Friday for the Boston premiere of his new film Cheatin’. The flick took home the Prix Du Jury at the 2014 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Comedy: Chris Hardwick at the Wilbur

Since this weekend is filled with comic book-related events, it’s only fitting that Chris Hardwick, the king of nerd culture, will be in town. The Talking Dead and @midnight host will be performing at the Wilbur on Friday night.

Weekend Pick: Free Comic Book Day

After you check out Avengers: Age of Ultron, head to your local comic shop for Free Comic Book Day on Saturday. Boston-based UFC fighter—and avid comic book fan—John “Doomsday’’ Howard will be doing a meet-and-greet at Comically Speaking in Reading from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Harp and MJ O’Connors will be hosting Corona-themed parties in celebration of the Kentucky Derby this weekend. Both venues will have “buckets of ponies’’ (7 oz. coronitas) as well as plenty of Derby-themed games on hand.
