Jon Stewart gets serious over Charleston shooting

‘The Daily Show’ host was not in a joking mood.

Jon Stewart was not his normal, humorous self on Thursday’s episode of The Daily Show.

The late-night host was uncharacteristically serious during his opening monlogue as he lamented over Wednesday’s shooting in Charleston, which left nine dead.

“I didn’t do my job today,’’ Stewart said. “Maybe if I wasn’t nearing the end of the run or this wasn’t such a common occurence, maybe I could have pulled out of the spiral, but I didn’t. I honestly have nothing other than just sadness.’’

While Stewart wasn’t in the mood to crack jokes, he did take the time to criticize the “gaping racial wound that will not heal’’ in the U.S. He also called out the way in which this country responds to mass shootings.

’’By acknowledging it, by staring into that and seeing it for what it is, we still won’t do jack shit,’’ Stewart said. “Yeah, that’s us and that’s the part that blows my mind.’’
