Jon Stewart calls Charleston the ‘Confederate Epcot’

“You can’t spit your tobaccy in Charleston without hitting a public monument to the glorious days of slavery.’’

In the wake of the Charleston shooting tragedy, there’s been a growing call to take down the Confederate flag hanging atop the South Carolina Statehouse.

Jon Stewart added his voice to the movement on Monday’s episode of The Daily Show and said that removing the flag was “the absolute least that can be done.’’

The late night host also took the city to task for all of the other racist symbols that adorn the streets surrounding Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

“You can’t spit your tobaccy in Charleston without hitting a public monument to the glorious days of slavery,’’ Stewart said. “In the context of Charleston’s extensive Confederate porn industry, the flag is just the money shot. That town is like Confederate Epcot.’’

Stewart wasn’t the only Comedy Central host to bring attention to Charleston’s affinity for the Confederate flag as Larry Wilmore decided to tackle the topic on last night’s Nightly Show.

“We’re not talking about an official government flag,’’ Wilmore said. “We’re talking about a relic that has no purpose anymore.’’
