A musical about the T is returning to ImprovBoston

Finally, an MBTA experience people will actually enjoy.

The announcement plays on the above-ground branches of the Green Line.

Unless you count the squeals of the Red Line as it rounds the sharp turn into Harvard Station or the obnoxiously loud Kanye West song emanating from a fellow passenger’s headphones, there’s nothing especially musical about riding the T. But as an upcoming show at ImprovBoston aims to prove, the humor and pathos of a terrible T experience are perfect fodder for musical theater.

That’s the gist behind T: An MBTA Musical, the award-winning musical created by Melissa Carubia, who composed the show’s music and wrote the lyrics, and John Michael Manship, who wrote the book (the narrative that keeps a musical from being a disjointed medley of songs). Though the musical is rooted in the humdrum setting of the T, there’s a lot more to An MBTA Musical than an airing of transit grievances.

T: An MBTA Musicaltells the tale of three 20-somethings whose lives have been derailed by the MBTA’s incompetency,’’ according to ImprovBoston’s website.’’ When they discover a secret map that will enable them to overthrow the transit system’s inadequacy, they set forth on a colorful journey that is part love story, part melodrama, part scavenger hunt, all one big transportation nightmare.’’

It’s that inventive leap that won the show “Best Musical – Small/Fringe’’ from Broadwayworld.com in 2011, as well as accolades for its direction, choreography, and musical direction in 2012.

“It’s really a story about people, rather than just a story that complains about the T,’’ Carubia told Boston.com when the musical first debuted in 2011.

The show begins its run at ImprovBoston on Friday, February 26 at 10 p.m. and will be performed every Friday until its final show on Friday, May 20. Tickets start at $25 and are available on ImprovBoston’s website.
