Twitter had a field day with the Oscars Best Picture mistake
People responded to the historic gaffe with jokes about the election, Super Bowl, and more.
In one of the most bizarre twists in Oscars history, La La Land was briefly announced as the winner of the Best Picture award before Academy Awards officials hurried to the podium to inform the people onstage and the audience that Moonlight had actually won the top prize.
Naturally, people began making jokes on social media seconds later.
The most immediate — and obvious — comparisons likened the situation to when Steve Harvey accidentally announced the wrong winner of the Miss Universe pageant in 2015.
Steve Harvey: no one can top what i did
Oscars 2017: hold my beer ?#Oscars #Oscarfail #envelopegate

The comedian eventually responded to the jokes with a few of his own.
Good morning everybody! Went to sleep early last night. So… what I miss? #Oscars

Call me Warren Beatty. I can help you get through this! #Oscars

Others noted the similarities between Moonlight‘s surprise win and the Patriots’ historic comeback in Super Bowl 51.
I can't believe the Super Bowl and the Oscars were both decided in overtime for the first time this year.

The #Oscars are my Super Bowl and that was the most thrilling overtime I've ever seen. Also the only overtime.

Perhaps most commonly, people compared the Oscars result to that of the recent election of President Donald Trump over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
OMFG MOONLIGHT ACTUALLY WON AND HILLARY CLINTON IS PRESIDENT! #Oscars

Amazing ending. Wish that had happened on Election Day.

Most nights, I have a dream in which what just happened at the #Oscars actually happened on election night.

You know what the problem is — millions of Academy members voted illegally.

La La Land should have campaigned more in Wisconsin.

Some people went for all of the jokes above, drawing connections between the Oscars, the Super Bowl, the election, and more.
I really think we're in some break in simulation. Things are just going haywire. NBA final. World Series. Election. Super Bowl. Oscars.
— Farhad Manjoo (@fmanjoo) February 27, 2017
World Series, election, Super Bowl, Oscars… matrix is feeling very glitchy these days. Honestly, I'd love for something to just be boring.
— Jody Avirgan (@jodyavirgan) February 27, 2017
The election, the Super Bowl and the Oscars are like a collective slap in the face to people who like to turn in early.

With so many people riffing on the same subject at the same time, however, some people got pretty tired of the torrent of unoriginal jokes.
The deadline for ending all your jokes comparing the #Oscars to the election is …. now.

Staying off Twitter until "Oscars = The Election" ends. See you…Wednesday? April? Never?
— Alex Schmidt (@AlexSchmidty) February 27, 2017
1 of the many amusing differences btwn the oscars & the election is one is an award show & the other directly affects the lives of millions
