A month after unconfirmed reports surfaced that Mindy Kaling was pregnant, the actress and Cambridge native publicly announced the news in an interview with Sunday Today host Willie Geist, saying she’s “really excited” about the prospect of motherhood.
“It’s so unknown to me,” Kaling, 38, told Geist in a preview clip posted on Tuesday. “I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands,’ which is kind of a fun feeling.”
The creator and star of The Mindy Project joked that she was looking forward to joining the ranks of know-it-all parents once her child is born.
“It’s so easy to criticize parenting until you’re a parent,” Kaling said. “So one of the nice things about becoming a parent is that I’ll be able to openly criticize other parenting because I will have a child.”
Kaling also cited her own mother’s parenting skills as something she hopes to emulate. Kaling’s mother, who worked as an ob/gyn at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston, died of pancreatic cancer in 2012.
“My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” Kaling said. “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”
Kaling’s full interview will air on Sept. 10 on Sunday Today, which is on at 8 a.m.
