The first trailer for Ocean’s 8 is here, and it looks like the all-female heist team is a formidable match for their male counterparts.
Ocean’s 8 stars Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney), the protagonist of Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen. Much like the opening scene of Ocean’s Eleven, in which Clooney’s character leaves prison, the trailer begins with Bullock leaving prison vowing to live “the simple life,” but quickly reuniting with her parter in crime, Lou (Cate Blanchett), to plan a $150 million jewel heist at the Met Gala.
Along for the ride is a group of criminals with various skills, including Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, and Cambridge native Mindy Kaling, who tells Bullock it would take her “five or six hours” to make seven pieces of fake jewelry.
“How long if I told you you didn’t have to live with your mother anymore?” Bullock asks, as the trailer cuts to Kaling’s on-screen mom admonishing her for not having a husband.
“Less,” Kaling replies.
According to Variety, Ocean’s 8 is both a sequel to and a spinoff of the previous Ocean’s films. Both Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, who directed the first three movies, serve as producers for Ocean’s 8, and according to IMDbPro, the film features Matt Damon and Carl Reiner reprising their roles from the first three films as Linus Caldwell and Saul Bloom, respectively.
Ocean’s 8 is expected to hit theaters June 8, 2018.
