Timothy Affleck, the father of actors Ben and Casey Affleck, said that Hollywood has had a detrimental effect on the lives of his two children, and that it has been a “major factor” in Ben Affleck’s problems with alcohol.
“It has taken a toll on both of my sons,” Affleck, 74, told international fashion magazine Grazia. “Hollywood is a disgusting place. I think that’s been a major factor in Ben’s drinking. You’re kind of forced to develop a persona that is hard to shed and go home to your family. It affects your whole life. I think that’s one of the dangers of the film industry.”
Timothy also said that he hoped his elder son is not dwelling on his divorce from actress Jennifer Garner.
“In the world outside of the entertainment industry, marriages end all the time,” Timothy told Grazia. “It’s as common as dishwater, it’s nothing to dither about.”
One topic Timothy Affleck did not directly address is the claims of sexual misconduct against his sons. In October 2017, Ben Affleck apologized for “acting inappropriately” toward former MTV VJ Hilarie Burton, who says the actor groped her while she was hosting MTV’s Total Request Live in 2003. In 2010, Casey Affleck settled claims of sexual harassment levied against him by two women who worked with the actor on the set of his 2010 film, “I’m Still Here,” in which Timothy Affleck had a role.
“You’d have to ask them,” Timothy told Grazia of the sexual misconduct claims. “It doesn’t interest me, they know what they’re doing. They’re both kind and good men. They treat women well, I can guarantee that. After 40 odd years, you know your kids.”
