Ellen Pompeo on Patriots’ loss: ‘That’s what they get for supporting the giant Cheeto-in-charge’

The actress from Everett talked about the Pats' Super Bowl loss on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

When “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Ellen Pompeo appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Thursday, Kimmel asked the Everett native for her reaction to the New England Patriots’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

“That’s what they get for supporting the giant Cheeto-in-charge,” Pompeo said. “That’s karma for you, Belichick.”

“Did they support him, or did he decide they supported him?” Kimmel asked.

“They didn’t denounce him,” Pompeo responded.

When Kimmel asked if that meant she was rooting against the Patriots, Pompeo said, “I didn’t say that!”

Pompeo told Kimmel that Super Bowl Sunday was actually her husband Chris Ivery’s birthday. Ivery is also a Massachusetts native, and so Pompeo threw him a Super Bowl/birthday party.

“It was time to take the cake out and sing,” Pompeo said. “It was becoming obvious that it wasn’t going to go in a good direction. So it was a very somber rendition of ‘Happy Birthday.'”

Pompeo also shared photos of the couple’s third child, Eli Christopher, born in 2016.

“It’s a little weird for a Patriots fan to name his kid Eli, isn’t it?” Kimmel asked, referring to New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Pompeo said her husband brought up the same point. She said she liked the way Eli sounded with the last name Ivery, but it was “like the 75th name” they considered.

“I think I had beat him down and somehow I won,” she said.
