Super Bowl ‘selfie kid’ from Mass. gets big surprises from Justin Timberlake and the NFL

Ryan McKenna was left teary-eyed on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

Scituate teen Ryan McKenna got a big surprise at the Super Bowl when Justin Timberlake took a selfie with him during the halftime show, turning him into a meme. Now forever known as “selfie kid,” McKenna got an additional pair of big surprises on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” thanks to Timberlake and the NFL.

In an episode that will air in the Boston area on Friday at 3 p.m. on WCVB, McKenna revealed how emotional he was when his dad told him they were going to the Super Bowl two weeks before the game.

“I just started crying,” McKenna said. “I couldn’t believe it. Just to go the Super Bowl — a dream come true.”

McKenna was soon teary-eyed once more, when DeGeneres surprised the teen by having Timberlake call into the show. The pop star had more good news for McKenna and his family.

“Because all of this has happened, I thought to myself, I really want to meet you properly,” Timberlake said. “I’m going to be coming to TD Garden on tour to play in Boston, so I’d like to invite you and your family to come, and I want to meet you.”

McKenna’s good fortune didn’t stop there. DeGeneres also gave him and his family a VIP experience at a Patriots home game next season, with four tickets to a game and four pregame field passes, courtesy of the NFL.

“Oh my God,” McKenna said. “This is unbelieveable.”

Before the segment ended, Timberlake had one last message for McKenna.

“Ryan, I look forward to meeting you, and our second selfie together.”
