On Sunday night, Kimmel returned to the Academy Awards to host for a second time. Last year, Kimmel’s hosting job was essentially a giant roast of Damon, who co-produced the Oscar-nominated 2016 film “Manchester by the Sea.”
Damon, whose 2017 films “Downsizing” and “Suburbicon” did not receive Oscar nods, was not in attendance this year, but that didn’t stop Kimmel from finding a couple of opportunities to tease the Cambridge native.
The first came after a montage of war film clips to honor servicemen and women.
“On behalf of the Academy, I want to apologize to our brave U.S. military men and women here and overseas for including Matt Damon in that montage,” Kimmel said. “You deserve better than that, you really do.”
During the final moments of the broadcast, Kimmel snuck in another Damon quip.
“And apologies to Matt Damon,” the host said. “We ran out of time for him.”
