Stephen Colbert mocks Donald Trump for tweets about the Boston Globe’s #FreePress editorial

"It's true, honesty wins. But lying will get you the Electoral College."

Stephen Colbert weighed in on Donald Trump’s tweets about the #FreePress editorials coordinated by the Boston Globe, mocking the president for his response.

Colbert first took time to rib the Globe and other outlets that ran editorials denouncing Trump’s attacks on the free press, characterizing the articles as relatively futile gestures.

“Ooh, that’ll get him,” Colbert said, referring to the 400-plus outlets that participated. “Fighting back. It’s like that famous scene in ‘300’ where the Spartans released coordinated editorials.”

Colbert also singled out the Globe for kickstarting the nationwide effort.

“This initiative was spearheaded by the Boston Globe,” Colbert said, “which led the charge with their editorial, ‘The Free Press is wicked smaht, Donald Trump has gone too fahhhhhhh!'”

The show then flashed a satirical Globe front page, which also featured the joke headline “Dunkin Donuts opens inside another Dunkin Donuts.”

Colbert saved more of his pointed barbs for Trump, reading in a mock-Trump voice the first of two tweets the president published about the #FreePress initiative Thursday morning, which read, “The Boston Globe, which was sold to the the Failing New York Times for 1.3 BILLION DOLLARS (plus 800 million dollars in losses & investment), or 2.1 BILLION DOLLARS, was then sold by the Times for 1 DOLLAR. Now the Globe is in COLLUSION with other papers on free press. PROVE IT!”

“Prove it? You can’t accuse someone of something and then demand they prove it,” Colbert said, before imagining a hypothetical situation in which that would happen. “I think you committed the murder, Roger! Now prove it and let me know if I’m right. I’ll be in the bar.”

Colbert then moved onto the president’s second tweet, which read, “There is nothing that I would want more for our Country than true FREEDOM OF THE PRESS. The fact is that the Press is FREE to write and say anything it wants, but much of what it says is FAKE NEWS, pushing a political agenda or just plain trying to hurt people. HONESTY WINS!”
