Ben Affleck talks addiction, love for Jennifer Garner on the ‘Today’ show

"You can tell you still love her."

Ben Affleck has no problem speaking candidly about his alcoholism.

When the Cambridge native stopped by NBC’s “Today” show on Monday morning to talk about his upcoming Netflix movie “Triple Frontier” alongside costar Charlie Hunnam, he tackled questions not only about the new film, but about his battles with alcohol addiction as well.

“It doesn’t really bother me to talk about alcoholism and being an alcoholic,” Affleck told “Today” host Hoda Kotb. “It’s part of my life. It’s something that I deal with. It doesn’t have to sort of subsume my whole identity and be everything, but it is something that you have to work at. I feel like I had a problem and I really want to address it, and I take some pride in that.”

Kotb also brought up Affleck’s ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, and how the two manage a co-parenting arrangement in spite of their recent divorce.

“I hope I’m a pretty good dad. I certainly try very hard,” Affleck said. “I’m lucky they’ve got a great mom. She helps out a great deal with making sure that we co-parent in as good a way as possible.”

Affleck then shared an adorable story of how Garner dressed up as Astrid from “How to Train Your Dragon” for their son’s birthday party, and Kotb commented on how she can still sense how much Affleck cares for Garner.

“You can tell you still love her, when you just talked about her,” Kotb said.

“Of course. She’s wonderful,” Affleck said. “You know, somebody’s the mother of your kids, they’re gonna be the most important, central person in your life, and that’s good.”
