‘I’m in such a great place:’ Ben Affleck discusses recovery with Ellen DeGeneres

The Cambridge native also discussed his new movie "Triple Frontier," his back tattoo, and why he's been wearing a Dodgers hat.

After a tumultuous 2018, Ben Affleck says he is in “a great place” now.

On an episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” set to air locally on Thursday at 3 p.m., Affleck discussed how he has moved forward after a year that saw him complete a stay in rehab for alcohol addiction and finalize his divorce from ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

“I could get depressed, I could feel like, ‘Oh, I’ve been through a lot, and this was hard, and that was hard,’ or I could be kind of embarrassed, but I have to say, I feel so good now, I’m in such a great place,” said Affleck, who’s now starring in the Netflix movie “Triple Frontier.” “The kids are healthy, you know, life is good. And so it’s like, whatever it took for me to get to this place, I’m grateful for it.”

Affleck also admitted that he’s had to briefly betray his beloved Red Sox and don a Dodgers hat, but for a good reason: He’s a coach for his son’s little league team, a role Affleck called “the dad dream.”

“I had a game last week and I was promoting the movie, and I was going to Asia, and I was like, ‘I have to come back a day early,'” Affleck said, adding that Netflix let him leave the press tour early to coach the game.

Affleck also discussed his much-mocked massive back tattoo of a phoenix rising from the ashes. DeGeneres joked it looked more like the phoenix was “rising from your a**,” but Affleck said that the tattoo represents something “really important” to him.

“It’s meaningful to me,” Affleck said. “I like it. It’s something that I sort of kept private. It wasn’t like I was doing photoshoots, or whatever. We were two hours north of the city on some island in Hawaii, and we didn’t know the paparazzi were there. So they got a picture of my tattoo.”
