The first trailer for Mindy Kaling’s “Four Weddings and Funeral” hit the internet Monday morning, giving viewers a chance to see how the classic romantic comedy will play out in series form.
The 10-episode Hulu limited series co-created by Kaling will only be loosely based on the 1994 Best Picture Oscar nominee. The plot centers around various complicated romantic situations and features — spoiler alert! — four weddings and a funeral.
In this version, Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel, “Game of Thrones”), Ainsley (Rebecca Rittenhouse, “The Handmaid’s Tale”), Craig (Brandon Mychal Smith, “Get on Up”), and Duffy (John Reynolds, “Stranger Things”) are the four longtime friends attempting to find their own fairytale love stories. The first complication for the group is depicted in the trailer, where Maya realizes Kash (Nikesh Patel, “London Has Fallen”), the man she shared a moment with in an airport, is dating Ainsley.
“Four Weddings” is just one of the many projects Kaling has recently been working on. The Cambridge native isn’t limiting herself to one streaming company, either: She’s also currently creating a show for Netflix loosely based on her own childhood.
“Four Weddings and a Funeral” hits Hulu on July 31.
