Charlestown got a snowy holiday makeover for filming of the new Disney+ movie ‘Godmothered’

Down the street from Bunker Hill Monument, it was a winter wonderland on Thursday.

There hasn’t been much snow in the Boston area this winter, but there has been some fake snow.

Production crews working on the Disney+ movie “Godmothered” laid down a layer of white fluffy stuff on Pleasant Street in Charlestown for filming on Wednesday and Thursday, with the street closed to traffic when filming got underway in the evening. Nearby houses were also adorned with holiday decor, similar to how buildings in Marblehead were decorated when the film crew shot scenes there earlier this month.

Prior to Marblehead and Charlestown, “Godmothered” also filmed scenes near the Boston Public Garden.

According to a plot synopsis provided by Disney, “Godmothered” is a comedy set at Christmas time about Eleanor, a young, inexperienced fairy godmother-in-training (Jillian Bell, “22 Jump Street”) living in “The Motherland” who learns that her profession will soon cease to exist. Determined to prove that the world still needs fairy godmothers, she finds a letter from a 12-year-old girl in distress named Mackenzie and sets out to find her.

Eleanor then discovers that Mackenzie (Isla Fisher, “Wedding Crashers”) is now a 40-year-old single mom working at a news station in Boston. Her husband passed away several years earlier, so Mackenzie has given up hope on “Happily Ever After,” but Eleanor is determined to “give Mackenzie a happiness makeover, whether she likes it or not,” according to the synopsis.

Charlestown resident Amanda Marshall, who lives a few blocks from Pleasant Street, stumbled on filmmaking while out walking her dog, Bruin.

“I thought at first that Christmas decorations hadn’t been taken down and was a little surprised, but once I saw the cameras and crowds, I quickly understood,” Marshall said. “The fake snow looked real, and it was so interesting to watch them make it.”

Marshall posted a photo of Bruin — who she said was “on his best behavior” — posing on set to the dog’s Instagram page. She said that the pair planned to walk by again on Friday night when filming was set to continue.

Along with Bell and Fisher, “Godmothered” will co-star Emmy winner Jane Curtin (“Saturday Night Live”) as headmistress of The Motherland, Jillian Shea Spaeder (“Walk The Prank”) and Willa Skye (“Lazy Susan”) as Mackenzie’s young daughters, and Mary Elizabeth Ellis (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) as Mackenzie’s sister. The film will also feature Santiago Cabrera (“Star Trek: Picard”), Artemis Pebdani (“Scandal”), Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Brittany Runs a Marathon”) and Stephnie Weir (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) playing Mackenize’s news station colleagues, while June Squibb (“Nebraska”) and Carlease Burke (“Child’s Play”) appear as godmothers populating The Motherland.

Directed by Sharon Maguire (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”), “Godmothered” does not have an official release date.
