Go virtual whale watching with the NEAQ this weekend, ahead of Boston Harbor Cruises’ return

Watch minke, fin, and humpback whales from a Boston Harbor Cruise, on your laptop screen.

The New England Aquarium is offering the chance to whale watch from a social distance this weekend, ahead of the Boston Harbor Cruises’ return to in-person whale watching expeditions.

Masked up, Boston Harbor Cruises Director of Research and Education Laura Howes leads the aquarium’s virtual visit to Stellwagen Bank on their Facebook page. Stellwagen Bank is home to fin whales, humpback whales, minke whales, and many other species who regularly feed there.

“We miss you all very much and we wish you could be out on the water. Hopefully, we gave you a little taste of what’s out there and what will be waiting when we can get back out,” Howes says in the video.

The New England Aquarium is set to reopen on July 16, with new guidelines to help stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. As outlined on their website, the new guidelines include: required mask wearing, utilizing a one-way travel path, and reduced attendance numbers to accommodate social-distancing. Some exhibits will not reopen yet (Sorry, touch tank lovers!)

The Boston Harbor Cruises will resume on Monday, July 13th.
