Boston Pops Concert Move Keeps the Beach Boys, Ditches Joey McIntyre
The Boston Pops concert organizers’ decision to move the July 4th extravaganza up a day was needed to keep the Beach Boys available, but it booted out Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block fame.
The threat from Hurricane Arthur made it necessary to change the date of the event from Friday, but it was the Beach Boys’ Saturday plans that pushed the entire fireworks show up to Thursday.
The Beach Boys already have a scheduled concert in Wantagh, NY on July 5th, so Boston organizers were forced to move the concert up a day or face a Surfin USA-less show. Given the enthusiasm for the concert from the Boys themselves, that decision must not have been too difficult. “I’ve always wanted to do something with the Boston Pops, and we finally got the call only after 52 short years,’’ Beach Boys member Mike Love told the Boston Globe.
But that move was bad news for Joey McIntyre, who, along with the cast of Phantom of the Opera, will no longer be performing at the show. McIntyre had only publicly announced his appearance at the show on Tuesday July 1st. His plans evaporated within a day.
FYI- unfortunately because of the change of plans I will not have the honor of singing with the #BostonPops tonight. Next year??! Happy 3rd!

For the Phantom performers, scheduled performances on Thursday and Saturday night kept them from attending the newly moved event no matter whether it was moved forward or back a day. The rest of the performers, including Megan Hilty of “Smash’’ and “Sean Saves the World’’ fame, will still be attending.
