One hundred years ago, Archibald Query invented Marshmallow Fluff in Somerville. Well actually, it’s kind of complicated.

Regardless, on Saturday, thousands gathered to celebrate the sweet treat’s centennial at the What the Fluff? Festival in Union Square.

More than 25 food vendors brought Fluff-themed snacks from chocolate Fluff cookies to bacon Fluffernutter pierogi. Local restaurants like Grub and Buena also served full entrees for those who couldn’t fill up on sugar alone, but no menu is complete without a Fluff dessert.

Along with the extensive Fluff cuisine, fans participated in Fluff activities organized by the festival’s “Department of Shenanigans,” from Fluff jousting to Fluff musical chairs.
