National Trails Day, the first Saturday in June, is an opportunity to give back to public lands. This year, sporting goods retailer REI has teamed up with Massachusetts’s Department of Conservation and Recreation to bring that goodwill to the Charles River Esplanade.

Between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on June 1, both parties are calling on outdoor enthusiasts to come out and take part in the day of conservation. REI and DCR staff will provide the tools and instructions; participants will supply the elbow grease.

REI requests that participants wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, and bring work gloves if possible. Registered participants will get a T-shirt and lunch out of the deal. You may want to sign up soon, though, as 12 spots remained at the time of this article’s publication.
