Mass. Health to Cover Gender Reassignment, Hormone Therapy for Transgender Patients

A new state health policy will provide healthcare to transgender residents to cover their medical treatments for gender dysphoria, the Patrick Administration announced Friday.

The Boston Globe reports:

Under changes proposed by the administration of Governor Deval Patrick, both hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery would be covered by MassHealth, the state Medicaid program for low-income residents, according to a statement from the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

The administration will also advise private insurers as well as the Group Insurance Commission to provide similar coverage to those privately insured as well as state and municipal employees.
