5 Outdoor Fitness Classes to Try This Summer
There are a lot of things we love about Boston, but the weather? Not one of them.
We have about three more months of bearable temperatures and I’m determined to take full advantage. That means walking if I can avoid the T, eating lunch outside as often as possible, and taking my workouts outside. Solo runs on the Charles are always nice, but sometimes you need a little motivation to get yourself out there. These fun outdoor fitness classes are sure to whip you into shape. Try them all before they move back inside!
BSC Commuter Boot Camp Series
Whip your bootie into shape at Boston Sports Club (BSC) free summer boot camp series. Organized in partnership with the City of Boston, the free 5-week outdoor boot camp is specifically designed for city commuters who want to skip out on the rush-hour and get their workout out of the way.
While everyone else is stuck in stand-still traffic on I-93, head to Clemente Field at Back Bay Fens this Tuesday for a fun, intense outdoor workout with BSC trainers.
The class is free, and all you need to bring is a towel or yoga mat! Meet behind the baseball diamond at Clemente Field Tuesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Dates: July 29 through August 26.
The boot camp is part of the City of Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department’s continued effort to provide Bostonians with affordable exercise options.
The boot camp will be led by BSC trainer Carrick Pell. Having served four years in the Marine Corps, Pell is a boot camp pro. In addition to teaching at BSC, Pell coaches the Babson College men’s rugby team.
The boot camp is designed according to the SAQ (speed, agility, quickness) fitness model in order to provide participants with a full body workout. The class will be held to top-40 music to energize the class.
“Basically the motto of the class is ‘sweat, b**ches,’’’ Pell said.
The class will begin with a dynamic warmup to getting the heart rate up and improve flexibility. Then comes the heart of the workout: cardio. You’ll burn tons of calories with running exercises such as stair running. Pell isn’t going to let you off easy. The class will wrap up with body exercises to tone your arms and abs.
“The synergy of working together can be really motivating,’’ Pell said, praising the group exercise model. “At the same time, you move at an individual pace, and the coach can help you and focus you.’’
While working out with a former marine can be intimidating, Pell has designed the class to accommodate both beginners and athletes alike.
