The Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Friday announced the approval of four medical marijuana dispensary registrations in the state. Dispensary applications were approved in Boston, Fairhaven, Tanton, and Greenfield. In Boston, Patriot Care Corp.’s dispensary license for a Suffolk County location makes theirs the first Boston medical marijuana dispensary to be approved.

“I am pleased wi th the steady progress we are making and expect the first dispensaries to open later this winter,’’ Karen van Unen, the state’s Medical Use of Marijuana Program Executive Director said in a statement. “By expanding access into these additional counties, we are promoting our goals of patient access and public safety across the Commonwealth.’’

The first 20 licenses were approved in January, but after concerns about the legitimacy of the applications and criticism of the state’s grading process for approval, the Department of Public Health eliminated 9 of the 20 original applicants from the pool in June.
