Vice President Joe Biden introduced the White House’s new “1 is 2 Many’’ campaign earlier this week in Washington, following a speech for sexual assault awareness on college campuses. Rape victim Madeline Smith joined Biden at the White House and recounted her experience and lack of support from Harvard administration just two years ago. Biden continued to stress that the way the public — not only those employed on college campuses — thinks about and reacts to sexual assault needs to change.
“We almost always ask the wrong questions when it comes to sexual assault,’’ said Biden. “We continue to ask questions like, ‘What were you wearing? What did you say?’’’
The vice president also revealed the video PSA for “1 is 2 Many’’ featuring the noteworthy likes of Seth Meyers, Steve Carell, Dulé Hill, Daniel Craig, Benicio del Toro, alongside Biden and President Obama. The one-minute clip calls for awareness and proactivity to prevent sexual assault — not just on college campuses, but anywhere else it may happen.
The campaign is part of Obama’s White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault plan of action, which was established in late January. The task force aims to crack down on the mistreatment of sexual assault cases involving both female and male students on college campuses and will provide continuous education and assessment on the subject matter.
The names of 55 colleges and university currently facing Title IX investigation regarding their mishandling of sexual assault cases according to the task force were released today, according to the AP. Among the 55, six Massachusetts schools were listed: Amherst College, Boston University, Emerson College, Harvard College, Harvard University Law School, and UMass Amherst.
