The extreme cold has led to the cancellation of two popular events for Boston’s New Year’s celebration.

The 6 p.m. parade to Boston Common and the 7 p.m. fireworks on New Year’s Eve have been canceled “in anticipation of the extreme cold conditions,’’ organizers announced late Saturday night.

The decision followed a “recommendation of public safety,’’ the announcement said.
