In 2016, Manchester by the Sea was one of the most buzzed-about movies at the Sundance Film Festival, with critics praising Casey Affleck for the role that eventually landed him the Academy Award for best actor.
At this year’s Sundance, one of the most critically acclaimed titles was another film starring the Cambridge native, A Ghost Story. Based on the film’s first trailer, which hit YouTube Tuesday morning, audiences are in for a weird, emotional journey.
That journey is not filled with frightening CGI phantasms and jolting jump-scares, as the title A Ghost Story might lead you to believe. Instead, the movie’s titular spirit is just a person wearing a white sheet with holes for eyes.
The trailer reveals very little about the plot, and one critic suggested that the less audiences know about the film, the better.
But for those who are curious, Affleck plays a recently deceased man who reappears as a ghost and wanders the house he shared with his wife (Rooney Mara).
A Ghost Story is directed by David Lowery, who also directed Affleck in Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (2013) and most recently helmed Pete’s Dragon (2016). The film is being distributed by A24, the same company that released 2017 Best Picture winner Moonlight, though the tone and theme of A Ghost Story seems more in line with two other melancholic fantasies released by the studio in 2016, The Lobster and Swiss Army Man.
A Ghost Story is slated to hit theaters July 7.
