Watch the intense first trailer for ‘Stronger,’ the Boston Marathon bombings biopic

The first trailer for Stronger, the biopic starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, hit the internet Thursday morning.

In the trailer, we see Gyllenhaal as Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the 2013 bombings, struggling through a difficult rehab process.

Also making an appearance is Tatiana Maslany as Bauman’s then-girlfriend Erin Hurley, who Bauman was waiting for at the finish line when the bombs went off. (In February, a spokesperson for Bauman and Hurley announced that the couple, who married in 2014, was getting a divorce.)

“You just have to show up for once,” Maslany tells Gyllenhaal in the trailer, after a doctor revealed that Bauman had missed some of his physical therapy appointments.

“Show up?” Gyllenhaal screams. “I showed up for you!”

Stronger is based on Bauman’s 2014 autobiography of the same name, which recounts both the immediate aftermath of the bombings and Bauman’s long road to recovery.

The film shot scenes throughout the Boston area during the spring of 2016, around the same time as Mark Wahlberg’s Boston Marathon bombings movie, Patriots Day. In the movie’s trailer, you can spot exterior shots of TD Garden, where Gyllenhaal recreated the iconic moment when Bauman waved a “Boston Strong” flag at a Bruins playoff game, and the Spaulding Rehabilitation Center, where Bauman underwent rehabilitation.

Stronger, which also stars Miranda Richardson and Clancy Brown as Bauman’s mother and father, is set to hit theaters Sept. 22.
