Summer may be winding down, but there’s still time to make that last trip over to Martha’s Vineyard. While you’re enjoying the scenic island sights, get your grub on at one of the plenty of places to find a good meal. Here are the top 10 according to TripAdvisor users.
1. Back Door Donuts, Oak Bluffs
It can certainly rank as an upset that on an island filled with different varieties of seafood that a bakery winds up the top-ranked dining experience. But that’s the case with Martha’s Vineyard Gourmet Café and Bakery’s Back Door Donuts, who serve the most anticipated doughnuts on the island. Expect to wait 20-25 minutes during the height of the season for these sought-after favorites, but as one TripAdvisor reviewer said, “Don’t let the line discourage you. While on the island, you have to have this experience of standing in line late at night to get hot doughnuts and pastries sold out of the back door of this bakery kitchen.’’
2. Larsen’s Fish Market, Menemsha
Enjoy a dinner in the rough at Larsen’s Fish Market, in Menemsha, where the atmosphere is minimal, but the fresh seafood is among the best the island has to offer. “Brings you the real Vineyard life,’’ one TripAdvisor reviewer wrote. Summer, cherrystones, and a great view.’’ Grab a bottle of wine, some lobster, and catch the sunset at the beach for a quintessential Martha’s Vineyard experience.
3. Menemsha Fish Market, Menemsha
The scene isn’t much different next door at Menemsha Fish Market, which resides on the same docks as Larsen’s, but can be decidedly less crowded, depending on the time of day. As one TripAdvisor reviewer sums it up: “The more famous neighbor has cooler T-shirts and souvenirs. Other than that, they are darned close in quality and value.’’
4. Black Sheep and Trio, Edgartown
Black Sheep and Trio is an eclectic dining option that serves two purposes. By day, it’s a takeout cheese shop with some of the finest selections on Martha’s Vineyard. At night, Trio pairs this offerings with flights of wine and dinner selections. “As soon as we walked up to Black Sheep and Trio we knew we were in for a treat,’’ one TripAdvisor reviewer wrote. “This is a gourmet shop from top to bottom but the team is nothing but the friendliest and they are happy to help you and offer samples.’’
5. Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company, Oak Bluffs
The Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company has had the distinction of Yankee Magazine awarding it with the best clam chowder in New England, which is reason alone for a visit, as are the 15 beers on tap. “It was definitely the nicest restaurant I visited during my trip,’’ one TripAdvisor reviewer wrote. “I highly recommend dining here.’’
6. The Terrace at The Charlotte Inn, Edgartown
The Terrace, located at the Charlotte Inn in Edgartown, gets rave reviews for its formal atmosphere without being stuffy. Classic American cuisine and an extensive cocktail menu are highlights. One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote, “Our favorites include the lobster bisque that was creamy with large chunks of lobster and the ribeye steak that was done perfectly as requested. The price points were surprisingly reasonable for Edgartown and that says a lot in a place where swordfish and steak can easily top $50 per plate. But on top the great food, the dining room at the Charlotte Inn is undoubtedly one of the prettiest and most unique on the entire island — filled with art and English antiques. Cannot say enough good things about this new gem in Edgartown’s dining experience.’’
7. Slice of Life, Oak Bluffs
Slice of Life is a simple spot serving inexpensive breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, but it gets high marks for having “the best tuna on the island,’’ and pizza that is “actually the best in the area.’’ “If you want a breakfast that is fresh, reasonably priced, and delicious this is where you should go,’’ wrote one TripAdvisor reviewer.
8. The Red Cat Kitchen at Ken N’ Beck, Oak Bluffs
Imaginative appetizers, bar snacks, and main courses like harpooned swordfish make The Red Cat Kitchen an island favorite because of variety and taste. “A unique and memorable dining experience,’’ wrote one TripAdvisor reviewer. “I live here and this place far and away crushes all the other places on MV,’’ said another.
9. Blue Canoe Waterfront Grill, Vineyard Haven
The Blue Canoe boasts lobster, sandwiches, and a variety of seafood entrees in Vineyard Haven, and gets praise from TripAdvisor users for “great lunch with an amazing view.’’ It’s a hidden gem according to more than one who has found it to be among the best restaurants on the island.
10. Lambert’s Cove Restaurant, West Tisbury
