The new oatmeal cafe in Davis Square tops your bowl with fruit, fried eggs, and Sriracha

This isn’t grocery store-bought oatmeal. Or your grandmother’s oatmeal.

At the Oat Shop in Somerville’s Davis Square, the area’s first oatmeal cafe, customers are served hot bowls topped with everything from maple syrup to Sriracha.

“I’m excited to offer up something new and unique in the breakfast market,” owner Alan Donovan said.

The shop’s menu is divided into bowls fitting three categories: sweet, savory, and custom. Sweet bowls are filled with items like nuts, berries, seeds, almond butter, toasted coconut, and maple syrup, and have names like “Nuts Over Berries” and “Apple Pie.” Savory bowls pair oats with soy sauce, Sriracha, bacon, scallions, kale chips, and sweet potatoes, and are dubbed “Sriracha Fried Egg” and “Sushi Bowl.” Customers can also choose a combination of each by building a custom bowl, and can even add premium toppings like avocado, tofu, and smoked salmon.

On Tuesday, Oat Shop’s first day in business, Donovan said customers were nuts for the Nuts Over Berries bowl. It’s filled with almond butter, blueberries, and raspberries.

Donovan said another popular pick was the Sriracha Fried Egg bowl, which is made with cashew butter, soy sauce, Sriracha, and topped with a fried egg. The bowl is Donovan’s personal favorite.

“[The fried egg] mixes right in, and it’s just a great way to get a lot of protein,” Donovan said.

Donovan said he’s thrilled to finally open the cafe after developing the concept more than a year ago while working in finance in Washington, D.C. The Massachusetts native and oatmeal lover moved home last year to turn his dream into reality, drawing up a business plan, testing his recipes on family and friends, and scouting out a location.

He opened a pop-up at hybrid arts venue The Middle Gray in Brookline last summer to test the public’s reaction to his dishes.

“It was positive,” Donovan said. “By the end, we were getting really steadily busy and people were sad to see us go. It was good also for me to know that people still wanted hot oatmeal in the summer. That was a good thing, because I know people are going to want this in the fall and winter, but what about summer?”

Oat Shop, located at 22A College Ave. in Somerville, is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Updated 1/13/2017 at 10:35 a.m.: The cafe temporarily closed following its original Tuesday opening in order for permitting to get finalized, according to the owner. As of Friday at 7 a.m., the cafe is once again open for business.
