Avoiding the blues in Gulmarg

By Sam Lozier, Boston.com Correspondent

Today, Allen and I realized that along with running water and toilet paper, the hotel we’re staying in also doesn’t provide towels. So after skiing, we wandered into the part of Gulmarg that has open-stall style shops and found a fabric store that sold them.  The proprietor of the shop casually mentioned that we should “probably wash the towels” as we left the shop.

Initially we didn’t think much of it, but then it began to sink in that in a place like Gulmarg (where cleanliness isn’t exactly the top priority) we should probably listen to this guy.

After four sink-washing cycles that left the basin full of neon blue water from the dye, the towels were clean enough to use. We’re going to have to thank him for not turning us into Smurfs when we go to pick up the clothes we ordered.
