Dead presidents and family fun

It’s the President’s Day holiday, and New England ski resorts are rolling out the white carpet for families on vacation.

In all my years, I have never seen so many deals and special events – a sign of the times perhaps. Clearly, it’s a sign that you should take your kids to the slopes.

Here are some fun family festivities to check out:

BlackMountain in New Hampshire is hosting Dead Presidents’ Day Feb. 15. Pictures of former presidents are scattered on the slopes, find one and bring it to the 3 p.m. Presidential Trivia contest at 3 p.m. for prizes.

On Feb. 16, Okemo is celebrating PHAT Tuesday. Mardi Gras beads are strewn around the mountain. Redeem the beads in the lodge for prizes as part of their PHAT campaign (Protect your Head at All Times) promoting helmet safety.

Eddy the Yeti, SundayRiver’s elusive abominable snowman, will be making appearances from his home in the EnchantedForest. If you can’t go to Whistler for pictures with Olympic mascots Quatchi the Sasquatch and Mukmuk the marmot – here’s your chance at Eddy the Yeti. Just be gentle – he’s far more shy than his buddies Amos the Moose at Sugarloaf and Wally from the Red Sox.

ShawneePeak hosts its 22nd annual Family Fest on Feb. 22 with an ugliest sweater competition (maybe Mom and Dad can win that one), a blueberry pie eating contest, a skiing Poker Run and a snow sculpture contest. Rubber chickens and pink flamingos are hidden on ShawneePeak’s trails for prizes. Keep an eye out for Scooby Doo and Elmo too.

There are countless kid-friendly events on snow this week. Get out and enjoy with yours’.
