Paradise in Dharamshala

By Sam Lozier, Correspondent

Ski blogger Sam Lozier is spending a chunk of this winter skiing in India.

After a night of violent stomach illness in Dharamshala, and a queasy taxi ride, my friends and I arrived in Dharamshala last night. Up with the sun, I’ve been back on my feet since this morning, and haven’t stopped moving since. We’re currently residing in a great homestay spot in Vashisht, which is up the road from Manali. For roughly $4 a night I’ve got a kitchen, bathroom with hot water, and a balcony looking over the Himalayas and the Beas river. In town, a one minute walk from the room, there’s an old Hindu temple with a hot spring in it, so we’ve got a hot tub to soak in as well. The family that runs our house will cook some delicious Indian food for us when we don’t feel like cooking ourselves, and they provide fresh milk from the family cow twice daily.

Today we picked up our transportation for our time in Manali: Big, old, beat up,  royal Enfield motorcycles. We’ve been zipping all over town running errands (looking for maps, ATM, and food) on our temperamental steeds.

After a late lunch, we rode them up the valley to Solang Nalla, getting back just in time for a pre-dinner, hot-spring soak. Tomorrow, we’ll ride up to snow line with skis on our back and do a little touring (assuming the forecasted rain holds off). If it isn’t clear already, and as long there is snow at the end of the road, I think I may have just found paradise.
