Skiing with Sarah Palin?

I should be in Alaska with Sarah Palin right now. The annual ski writers’ meeting, formally known as NASJA (North American Snowsports Journalist Association) is being held in Alyeska, Alaska. Every year, my fellow ski writers and industry representatives gather in some grand ski place for great skiing and discussion about the ski biz. I wish I could be hobnobbing at the Iditarod with my rogue Republican friend Palin, enjoying après ski with my ski media peeps, and accepting a fourth “Honorable Mention” Harold Hirsch Award for my ski articles (yes, four times I have been runner-up — I am the Susan Lucci of ski writing).

Instead of carving up the cord or dropping steep chutes in Alyeska, I visited Montana last week where my son is “studying” at MSU and teaching skiing at Big Sky. I will have more on Montana’s magnificent skiing later; I just wanted some sympathy that I am missing out on an Alaskan adventure of a lifetime. Next year, the convention is at Heavenly (pictured), so there is always hope for a California trip and another chance at first place in the writing contest.
