This weekend’s Dumont Cup at Sunday River will be like an episode of HBO’s hit show “Entourage,” only on snow.
The Third Annual Dumont Cup features the freeskiing world’s version of Hollywood A-listers. Simon Dumont, who grew up skiing at The River before he went gold at the Winter XGames, is the host and leader of the pack bringing his posse of pro skier friends to town for his stylin’ ski competition.
If you missed the Winter XGames in Aspen or the Euro XGames in Tignes, this is an up-close encounter with the big names in big air and slopestyle skiing. The Dumont Cup this Friday and Saturday is a pro-am event at Sunday River’s Barker Mountain on the Rocking Chair Park, currently being supersized by Dumont himself. Spectator will be treated to a showcase of the latest high flying spins, grabs and flips off rails and huge jumps designed by Simon.
What’s super cool about the Dumont Cup, besides the top talent that rolls into The River for the weekend, is that young amateur skiers get to compete against their pro idols and hopefully get noticed here. Most freeski competitions take place out west or in Europe. Bethel’s homeboy Simon Dumont had a goal three years ago to offer a venue for local kids to show their tricks at his home resort. The Dumont Cup has exploded since 2009 and is now open to 200 competitors with $20,000 in cash up for grabs.
As for Simon’s impressive roster of pro pals, expect to see Jossi Wells, Gus Kenworthy, Ian Cosco, Mike Riddle, Justin Dorey, Pete Olenick, Bobby Brown, Jacob Wester, and past Dumont Cup winners Tom Wallisch and Alex Schlopy. These guys all go big, especially in Saturday?s finals when 20 pros go up against the 20 qualifying amateurs.
This makes Sunday River the place to be for star studded skiing this weekend. In addition to The Dumont Cup, Sunday River also hosts Maine Handicapped Skiing’s 26th annual fundraiser Ski-A-Thon on Saturday, followed by the Eat the Heat Chili Contest and Firefighters’ Race on Sunday.
