It’s not officially winter until Dec. 22, but for skiers and riders the month of December typically means game on, gear up.
Apparently Mother Nature has other ideas with her recent warming trend throughout New England.
Folks are stringing holiday lights outside in shorts. News coverage is more about Red Sox spring training and Bobby Valentine’s day than winter sports. Ski resorts that have remained open however are providing early season turns, and spring-like conditions. On the plus side, no need for facemasks and hand warmers.
Sunday River continues to lead the pack – they have the most terrain open, 66 acres served by three lifts – Barker, Locke and South Ridge. Killington, Bretton Woods, Stowe and Okemo are all in the game skiing on snowmaking terrain – in that order. Sugarloaf, Jay Peak and Sugarbush will reopen asap or tbd.
Ski areas will blast their snow guns whenever temperatures permit. You can do your part with a snow dance. It appears to have worked for Wyoming, Washington, Utah, and the Canadian Rockies. Think snow, thank you.
