Despite perception or appearance around the lift lines, skiing is growing as a dame dominated sport – at least by dollars. Guys get grief for buying toys, but it turns out it’s not just the boys buying ski gear…it’s the gals.
Women’s spending is up to $1 billion on skis, boards, and alpine apparel last season, 59% of their cash was splashed on clothing. These spending statistics come from SIA, SnowSports Industries of America.
The biggest fleecing in female ski spending? Women purchased more fleece tops than any other ski apparel last season – how cozy and cute is that?! Other big ski expenditures were in women’s cross country equipment, with an 8% increase in sales bringing the Nordic biz to $5 million. AT (all terrain) alpine boot sales for women were up a whopping 217% so more chicks are going backcountry, or at least buying the versatile gear. Keep in mind, skier visits were up 11% last season – a great snow year, after a dry dismal disappointment in winter 2011-12. Already this season, snowsports purchases are up 3% (third quarter) versus 2012, and that doesn’t yet include Black Friday and the White Christmas purchases which are up with recent colder temperatures and above normal snowfall.
