Our New York neighbors have finally caught on to what Boston has known for years — Curious George rocks!

Curious George has been named New York City’s official family ambassador. The city is hoping the popular children’s book character’s face on its travel guides to beaches, zoos, and museums will lure more families to the Big Apple. New York City’s ambassador program, which launched in 2009, has increased family visitation in the city by 26.5 percent, reports the Associated Press. Last year’s ambassador was “Where’s Waldo.’’

That’s all fine and dandy, New York. But let’s not forget that Boston is home to The Curious George Store, billed as the only Curious George store in the world and located in Harvard Square. Owner Adam Hirsch told us he’s happy about George’s new role, saying, “I think that’s wonderful.’’

The question is, will George’s higher profile lure New York tourists to Boston too?

“I certainly hope it does raise our profile,’’ said Hirsch. “If they learn that the world’s only Curious George store is here in the heart of Harvard Square, it wouldn’t be horrible.’’

According to Hirsch, The Curious George Store is very much a Boston experience. As the only Curious George store in the world, his goal was to make his store an iconic Boston destination, much like the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park, and Faneuil Hall.

Hirsch aims to give visitors a once in a lifetime opportunity at his store. In that vein, the store offers unique and collectible merchandise available only in Boston. Not only that, but the store offers valet parking for strollers, reading nooks for small children, a toy testing area for kids, exclusive T-shirts, and special events such as scavenger hunts and story times where kids can meet George himself.

We love this Instagram pic posted by mom Katie Freeman in Springfield, Missouri, which captures a child’s love of Curious George perfectly.

Sure, New York City has plenty of family-friendly things to do. But if the Freeman family heads to the Northeast, maybe they’ll bring their little Curious George lover our way.
