Pick your own summer fruit at these New England farms

Here’s what comes before apple-picking season.

Reminiscing about apple picking on a crisp fall day? You don’t have to wait. These New England farms offer a seasonal twist on the classic autumn activity.

Just remember to reach out to each farm to check the U-Pick conditions before heading there.

Applecrest Farm Orchards  in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire

Fruit you can pick: Blueberries from early July until mid-August, peaches, nectarines, and pears from early August until mid-September, and raspberries from mid-August until late September.

Four generations of the Wagner family have worked on this farm, which offers a plethora of fruit that can be picked all summer long. Visitors also have opportunities to see local bands perform live at free festivals throughout the summer and into the fall. While there, chow down on “inspired New England fare, grown and served on the farm” at Applecrest’s very own bistro, according to its website.

Belkin Family Lookout Farm in South Natick

Fruit you can pick: Plums from mid-August until early September, and peaches and nectarines from mid-August until mid-September.

The Belkin Family Lookout Farm has more than 60,000 fruit trees, according to its website. After picking the day away, head over to the Lookout Taproom and try Lookout Farm Brewing Co.’s craft ciders and beers, made on-site.

Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford, Connecticut

Fruit you can pick: Blueberries from mid-July through the end of August, peaches from mid-August until mid-September, pears from late August until mid-September, and raspberries from late August until late October.

In 1871, Walter Goodrich Bishop founded this farm at 52 acres. Today, Bishop’s Orchards is 300 acres and still operated by Bishops, nearly seven generations later, according to their website. Stop by Bishop’s Orchards Winery, which is featured on the Connecticut Wine Trail, and taste one (or more) of the 15-plus selections.

Russell Orchards in Ipswich

Fruit you can pick: Raspberries from mid-June until mid-August, blueberries from late June until late August, and blackberries from mid-July through August.

This family-owned, 120-acre fruit farm is packed with an array of produce. Prefer your fruit fermented? Russell Orchards’ Winery offers award-winning selections of ciders and wines, including Wild Blueberry wine, which earned Best Massachusetts Wine at the Eastern States Exposition Wine Competition in 2018.

Smolak Farms in North Andover

Fruit you can pick: Cherries from late June until the end of July, blueberries from mid-July until late August, raspberries from July through the end of September, and peaches and plums from mid-August until mid-September.

Carved by glaciers before being settled on by prehistoric Native American tribes, Smolak Farms boasts hundreds of years of history, according to their website. For those tired after a day of fruit picking, hop on on a weekend hayride to enjoy the 160-acre farm’s scenery, then get yourself a pastry at the Smolak Farms Bakery.

Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester

Fruit you can pick: Raspberries from late-August until October.

For those hoping to stay local, Wright-Locke Farm is just 10 miles from downtown Boston. This 380-year-old farm sits among hiking trails, ponds, wetlands, and hilltop glades, all of which are open to the public. While you can only pick raspberries yourself, you can also pop by the farm stand — and its shady patio — to browse a selection of local products, including jam, honey, and maple syrups.
