What do the Sant Antoni neighborhood of Barcelona, the Enmore suburb of Sydney, and Boston’s South End have in common? They were all just named to Time Out’s list of the 50 coolest neighborhoods in the world.

The South End ranked No. 48 on the recently published list, which ranked “the planet’s cultural and culinary hotspots — the places to be in 2018.” (The coolest neighborhood in the world, according to the publication, was Embajadores, Madrid.)

“Years ago a neglected neighbourhood that locals avoided, today Boston’s South End has become the city’s artistic hub, with dozens of galleries and design shops that wouldn’t be out of place in any of the world’s culture capitals,” Time Out wrote. “Tap into the inclusive vibe just by strolling the idyllic streets, which are lined with historic brownstones, unique small businesses, and inviting cafés.”

When in the South End, the publication recommended eating at Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette’s tapas restaurant Toro, ordering drinks at speakeasy-esque Wink and Nod, checking out open-studio events from the SoWa Artists Guild, and booking a stay at the modern AC by Marriott.

The South End was one of seven American neighborhoods to make the 50-spot list. Central District, Seattle was listed at No. 40; Hayes Valley, San Francisco took No. 34; Wynwood, Miami got No. 33; the West Loop, Chicago nabbed No. 18; the West Village, New York ranked No. 17; and Highland Park, Los Angeles came in at No. 9.

Time Out editors compiled the list of neighborhoods by drawing on the knowledge of its own editors and writers and by asking more than 15,000 people worldwide for the best neighborhoods in their cities as part of a City Life Index survey. In the survey, editors sought neighborhoods with buzz, cool new venues, affordability, places to stay, and a feeling of being “on the up,” according to the publication.
