Guests at the new Fondue Express restaurant in Rhode Island board a ski gondola for a meal rather than a ride.
The Ocean House resort in Watch Hill, R.I. opened the pop-up on Saturday for the winter season. Champagne is served beneath a chandelier made of wooden antlers, and customers — four at a time — dine on a three-course, Alpine-inspired prix fixe menu from plush seats amid heated wood floors inside a grounded gondola.
After munching on a Swiss meat plate of bresaola, Black Forest ham, cornichons, and pickled vegetables, guests can choose between barley soup and a salad of lamb’s lettuce with Champagne vinaigrette for the first course. For the main course, there’s a choice between raclette cheese with boiled potatoes, a traditional Swiss cheese fondue with bread and potatoes for dipping, and Swiss hash brown potatoes with veal sausage and onion sauce. All guests are served a Swiss plum tart with cinnamon ice cream and Swiss Christmas cookies for dessert, and head home with Swiss chocolates.
Dinner costs $75 per person, or $115 per person with wine pairings (plus gratuity and taxes). A portion of all proceeds will go to the Ocean House Fund for Charitable Giving, which helps children and families in need.
You’ll find the dining gondola on the resort’s North Lawn beside its 34-foot Christmas tree. Seating is available Sundays through Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays at 6 and 8:30 p.m. For reservations, which are required, visit oceanhouseri.com or call 401-584-7000. The restaurant will be open until Feb. 14, 2019.
